The Story Behind Joey’s Play & Learn

Joey’s Play & Learn was named in memory of Joey Hardison, a beloved member of the Craven County community whose life was filled with a deep love for family, children, and golf.

Joey developed a passion for golf at a young age and went on to play at both Mount Olive College and Atlantic Christian College after receiving a golf scholarship. His love for the game continued throughout his life. He became a longtime member of The Emerald Golf Club, earning the title of Club Champion in 1999 and Senior Club Champion in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

In November 2023, Joey passed away unexpectedly at the age of 61 after playing a round of golf at The Emerald. He is remembered by his family and friends for his love of the game, the friendships he built through it, and most importantly, his love for his family and for children.

In Joey’s memory, his family chose to help create opportunities for young children throughout Craven County. Their generosity and continued support have helped make Joey’s Play & Learn possible.

Through hands-on play, caregiver connection, and early learning experiences, Joey’s Play & Learn brings meaningful opportunities directly into communities and helps families access learning experiences that may otherwise be out of reach.

Joey’s name now lives on through every child who explores, plays, learns, and grows with us. His legacy continues through connection, community, and the opportunity for children and families to thrive.
